A jirga imposed a heavy fine on a man on Tuesday for killing his wife in Budho Jeho village within the limits of Keti Mumtaz police station in Larkana district.

Sono Jeho, 23, married 18-year-old Raheela Jeho, daughter of Muhammad Bux Jeho, two months ago. Last week, when Raheela asked her husband to allow her to visit her parents, he reportedly called some of his friends to the house, put a chain around her neck, tortured her and forced her to drink poisonous liquid. She died a few hours later.

Following her death, her father registered an FIR against Sono Jeho, Roshan Jeho, Dur Muhammad Jeho and Ahmed Jeho at the Keti Mumtaz police station.

According to sources, a jirga was held in Dakhan under the leadership of Sardar Zulfiqar Kamario to resolve the dispute. The jirga heard out both the parties, including Muhammad and Roshan, before declaring Sono and his accomplices responsible for killing Raheela. They imposed a fine of Rs2 million on the culprits but Muhammad waived off Rs600,000 of the fine. The remaining amount has yet to be paid.

Later, a reconciliatory delegation led by Kamario asked Raheela's father for forgiveness. Out of respect for the delegation, he agreed. Sources claimed that the purpose of the delegation was to misguide people about holding the jirga.

The Keti Mumtaz SHO told The Express Tribune that he had received information about the jirga and was trying to confirm it. He added that Sono was already in police custody while Dur Muhammad, another accused, had also been arrested.

Sono had previously killed his first wife six months ago after declaring her as 'kari' with Raheela's uncle. A jirga declared Raheela's uncle as 'karo' and ordered him to settle the dispute by giving a girl in marriage to Sono. Since he was unmarried, he requested his elder brother, Muhammad, to marry his daughter Raheela to Sono.
