KARACHI:

At least eight people were killed and four injured when a speeding dumper hit a passenger van in Swat Colony near Baldia Town neighbourhood of Karachi past Sunday midnight.

Quoting initial investigation, Baldia Town SHO Ejaz Hashmi told The Express Tribune that the victims, apparently members of a family, were returning home from a picnic party when their van collided head-on with the speeding dumper coming from the opposite direction.

“The van turned into a heap of mangled metal due to the impact of the collision, resulting in multiple deaths including that of four women and a ten-year-old boy,” he said. “The victims have not yet been identified but the police are trying to trace their relatives,” he added.

According to eyewitnesses, ambulances of different welfare organisations rushed to the crash site and shifted the casualties to the Civil Hospital.

Medics at the hospital said six people were brought dead to the hospital while two died during the course of treatment. “Two of the injured are also in critical condition and doctors are trying their best to save their lives,” said a medic.

After the accident, a contingent of law enforcement agencies reached the site and opened investigation.

According to the police, the driver of the dumper has been arrested and an investigation is under way to find out what caused the deadly crash.
