KARACHI: Unseeded Teh Min Jie stunned fourth seed Chenya Tucker of South Africa in straight games in their 2nd Bahria Town International Women’s Squash Championship first-round match at the Bahria Squash Complex in Rawalpindi.

However, it was not an easy take as Jie was made to work hard for her 11-9, 11-6 and 11-9 victory.

In another upset, qualifier Sachita Ingale of India beat sixth seed Slovakian Linda Hruzikova after five games with scores of 8-11, 11-5, 7-11, 12-10 and 11-8.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Maria Toorpakai Wazir overcame a tough challenge from Honk Kong’s Vanessa Chu to win 3-1 and move into the second round.

It was a see-saw battle between the two as Maria drew first blood, winning the first game 12-10. The second game proved to be as difficult as the first in yet another 12-10 game to Maria.

Leading 2-0, Maria slipped in the third game as Chu won it 11-8 to cut down her opponent’s lead to 2-1. However, Maria held on to the win with overall scores of 12-10, 12-10, 8-11 and 11-9.

South Africa’s Siyoli Walters, the event’s top seed, made light work of Malaysian Zulhijjah Binti Azan as she won 3-0 with scores of 11-3, 11-9 and 11-4.

Third seed Liu Tsz-Ling of Hong Kong downed local player Sadia Gul 11-4, 11-5 and 11-4, while Egypt’s Farah Abdel Meguid also won 3-0 against Hong Kong’s Carmen Lee.

Egypt’s Nadine Shahin hardly broke sweat in an easy 11-4, 11-4 and 11-5 victory over Pakistan’s Muqaddas Ashraf and Malaysian Rachel Arnold won 3-1 against Egypt’s Amina Yousry.
