MANSEHRA: The prime suspect in the murder of Orangi Pilot Project Director Perween Rahman was arrested on Thursday during a police raid in Mansehra.

According to police officials, the suspect Ahmed Khan alias Papu Shah was arrested from the urban limits of city.

“Yes, it is true that we have arrested Ahmed Ali alias Papu Shah from his house in Kashmiri Bazaar,” DPO Mansehra Ejaz Khan told reporters shortly after the operation.

The officer further revealed that an investigation team was expected to gather information about the suspects’ involvement in other cases and criminal activities in Karachi.

Hours after the arrest, the suspect was presented before a district and sessions court in Mansehra, who directed authorities to transfer the accused to Sindh Police for further investigation.

Providing details related to the case, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mansehra  Zulfiqar Jadoon said that Papu Shah’s accomplices had already been killed in a police encounter in Karachi while the 24-year-old assassin escaped to Mansehra.

Perween Rahman, a 56-year-old social activist, who devoted her life to the development of the impoverished neighbourhoods across the country, was gunned down near her office in Karachi’s Orangi Town in 2013.

In its ruling last year, the Supreme Court had ordered authorities to conduct a fresh probe into Rahman’s murder.
