KARACHI: The Union of Cycling International (UCI) has assured its cooperation in promoting and developing the sport in Pakistan as Iran have agreed to provide a cycling coach to train Pakistani cyclists, informed Pakistan Cycling Federation (PCF) secretary Azhar Ali Shah.

Shah said that an Asian Cycling Federation (ACF) congress was held on the sidelines of the 35th Asian Cycling Championship in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, where he met with his Iranian counterpart to discuss the promotion of cycling in Pakistan.

“Iranian officials have agreed and offered to provide assistance, and now the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) will finally decide whether to avail this opportunity or not,” Shah told The Express Tribune. “We have agreed on all the terms and conditions provided by the UCI for the coach and have forwarded it to the PSB.”

Shah further added that they have requested a coach for the junior level, citing the lack of performance by the senior players as the main reason for requesting a coach for junior cyclists.

Pakistan’s three male and two female cyclists featured in the 35th Asian Championship but failed to finish among the top 10 positions in any category. However, the official declared the performance as satisfactory and important for the players’ confidence.

Shah also stated that the cyclists in Pakistan need to up their game and the arrival of the Iranian coach will assist in helping the team reach the level required to compete internationally.

“On the arrival of the Iranian coach, the players would also have to work harder as it requires six months to get physically fit enough for training,” he added. “After that, the training for cycling would start and it will take a minimum of eight months for them to compete internationally.”
