SSP Jamshoro Naeem Shaikh had initially said that a CNG cylinder fitted in the vehicle exploded soon after it overturned at high speed, however he dispelled the reports later and said that all the four cylinders in the van were intact.
He clarified that the cause of the accident can only be known after experts examine the burnt van.
The injured victims included two children and three women.
An eye witness also told The Express Tribune that he saw the van in flames before it flipped over on the road.
"I saw at least eight bodies lying in the van near Pakeeza hotel, and was also able to see their bones and flesh" he added.
Shaikh said the passengers were travelling from Karachi. "The deceased will be identified after conducting DNA tests, " he added.
The Edhi sources confirmed the injured were out of danger and that five of them were shifted to Baqai Medical Hospital, Karachi.
