BA/BSc exams: Students cry foul over discrepancies in mark sheets

Several students get result cards with subjects they never appeared in.

ISLAMABAD: Aneela Razzaq, a fourth year student at a model college in Islamabad, bewildered when she found out that she has secured 78 marks in statistics — a subject she never appeared in — instead of economics.

The results of BA BSc annual exams held in May and June were announced last month.

Razzaq is not the only student who has received a ‘faulty result card’ but several other students of girl colleges affiliated with the Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) also have received mark sheets with full of discrepancies due to the sheer negligence and incompetence of the staff at the university’s examination section. Some students have got zero marks in some subjects while some have been issued mark sheets with subjects they had never appeared.



Since the colleges in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) were affiliated to the QAU almost two years, students and college administrations have been crying foul over the poor state of affairs at the university’s examination section.

Some 15 degree colleges, which were previously affiliated with the University of Punjab (PU), are currently affiliated with the QAU after their affiliation with the PU was revoked in 2012.

Since the affiliation with the QAU, colleges have been facing various problems including the programmes they offer at the college level, but the university does not. For example, many colleges offer journalism at the college level, but the university has no journalism or mass communication department.



According to the results announced earlier in December, most students of the Islamabad Model College for Girls (IMCG) G-10/4 have been declared fail in subjects they never appeared.

IMCG G-10/4 Office Assistant Raja Muhammad Iqbal said that they have taken up the issue with the QAU controller of examination to sort the things out.

College Vice-Principal Sameena Riaz said that they have written letters to the varsity seeking clarification about the gaffe and to make corrections.

“During the examination, question papers would arrive late very often and some times less than the required question papers were issued by the examination branch creating difficulties for the examiners to conduct exams smoothly,” she said.

The university has been functioning under an acting vice chancellor for the last eight months as the new Vice-Chancellor Dr Javaid Ashraf after joining the varsity three months back went to the US “to complete his teaching assignment”.

“The acting vice-chancellor, as an acting head, cannot take bold steps to solve the issues facing the colleges,” commented an official at the university.

QAU Controller of Examination Sardar Babar refused to accept that some glitches existed in examination section and wrong mark sheets were issued to the students.

“A certain lobby is bent on defaming the institution for no reason,” he said when asked about the blunders the examination staff has committed in the mark sheets.

“Colleges affiliated with the PU have results with 33 per cent pass percentage while we have 40 per cent. Enhance the capability of the teachers and students instead of blaming us,” he said adding that they have over 30 dedicated staff at the examination section to handle things.

A junior officer at the QAU examination section said that the staff lacked the capacity to handle issues professionally.
