Faisalabad jail: Two convicts may be hanged within 48 hours

ATC judge issues black warrants for prisoners Faiz Ahmad and Muhammad Sharif

FAISALABAD: Two condemned prisoners who were convicted in two separate terrorism cases by the Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) may be executed in District Jail Faisalabad within the next 48 hours.

According to Superintendent of District Jail Faisalabad Syed Babar Ali, ATC judge Muhammad Qasim has issued the black warrants for two condemned prisoners Faiz Ahmad and Muhammad Sharif who were detained in Faisalabad jail.

Accused Faiz Ahmad was awarded the death penalty by ATC judge Muqarrab Khan in April 2006 as he was involved in a terrorism case of police station Bara Ghar, district Nankana Sahib. The mercy petition of the convict was also rejected on September 3, 2007.



Similarly, ATC Judge Mujahid Mustaqeem had awarded capital punishment to accused Muhammad Sharif on June 15, 2000 as he was booked by Bara Ghar, district Nankana Sahib, police station in a terrorism case, and his mercy petition was also rejected on November 2, 2002.

The administration of the district jail submitted applications before the ATC judge asking for issuance of death warrants for both the condemned prisoners and the ATC Judge Muhammad Qasim has also formally issued the black warrants of both the convicts.

They may be hanged till death in the district prison of Faisalabad within the next 48 hours.

After receiving death warrants of the two prisoners, the jail authorities have also completed arrangements to send the convicts to the gallows.

Punjab Home Department sources revealed that as many as 50 death-row prisoners are likely to be executed in various jails of Punjab this year.

As many as six convicts have already been hanged after the lifting of moratorium on executions by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the army has also intensified operation Zarb-e-Azb in North Waziristan Agency and other tribal areas against the terrorists after the Peshawar massacre.
