Road accidents: At least 17 killed, 14 injured in mishaps

Both incidents involved passenger vans which plummeted into ravines

HANGU/ ABBOTABAD: At least 17 people died in two separate road accidents in Abbottabad and Orakzai Agency on Friday.

Five passengers, including a woman and her two sons, were killed in a road accident near Jabri, around 32 kilometres from Abbottabad, on Friday morning.

Police and eyewitnesses said a passenger coach carrying 14 commuters was en route to Haripur from Lora village. The driver, however, lost control of the vehicle near Kunhal Chowk and it plunged into a gorge, killing four people on the spot and injuring nine others of whom four were in critical condition.

Rescue workers shifted the dead and injured to Havelian and Abbottabad hospitals where one other passenger died. The deceased were identified as Parveen Bibi, her two sons Asad and Moheed, driver Shafqat and Banaras.

In Orakzai Agency, at least 12 people were killed and six were injured when a passenger van fell into a ravine in Sra Maila, Lower Orakzai Agency.

An official of the Orakzai Agency political administration said a passenger van was heading to the agency from Kohat. He added when it reached Sra Maila, it careened off the roadside while negotiating a turn.

The deceased included Muhammad Hilal, Liaqat Ali, Jamshed Ali, Muhammad Rauf and four school teachers whose names were not ascertained till the filing of this report.
