RAWALPINDI: A woman who was in the illegal custody of her in-laws was sent to a shelter home by the Lahore High Court (LHC) Rawalpindi bench on Tuesday. A bailiff recovered Saba Wadi and her daughter from the illegal custody on directives of Justice Mamoon Rashid.
Saba’s cousin Asif Hussain had filed a petition on her behalf in the LHC Rawalpindi bench. The legal counsel of the petitioner told the court that Saba was married to Naheem Akhtar, son of Muhammad Basharat who lived abroad.
He added that Naheem Akhtar went abroad six months ago and never came back. Saba’s daughter is two and a half years old. In this time period Saba’s in-laws, including Muhammad Basharat and Tika Khan would beat and abuse her on petty household matters. Saba contacted her husband numerous times but he did not ‘pay any heed to the situation’. Saba then filed a suit for dissolution of marriage in the family court of Gujhar Khan.
The legal counsel of the petitioner told the court that when their in-laws came to know about this suit, they started torturing her. She was in the illegal custody of Muhammad Basharat and Tika Khan who were threatening to kill her.
Given the urgency of the situation, the counsel urged that the court recover the woman using police force. After the last hearing, the court sent a bailiff to recover the woman and present her in court.
Saba insisted that she did not want to live with her in-laws or her parents. She said she would prefer to take her chances in the shelter home (Darul Aman). The court has sent Saba and her daughter to the shelter but will review the matter on November 26.
