ISLAMABAD:

Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Sikandar Hayat Bosan has said that the new notification of the Sindh government that set the minimum price of sugarcane at Rs155 per 40kg for crushing season 2014-15 is unjust and arbitrary.

He said earlier the Punjab government had fixed Rs180 per 40kg, while Sindh put the price at Rs182 per 40kg. He demanded that the Sindh government restore the older notification.

“Sugar mills have not yet started crushing of sugarcane, which is increasing problems for poor farmers,” he said.

“Farmers will suffer a huge loss if the Punjab government also cuts the sugarcane price. Delay in purchase of sugarcane will also affect the sowing of wheat and the target will not be achieved.”
