LAHORE:

Young Doctors’ Association announced on Thursday that will hold a protest against Shaukat Khanam Memorial Cancer Hospital’s (SKMCH) decision to lay off seven of its doctors and issue show-cause notices to five others.

A YDA delegation met with SKMCH founder Imran Khan on November 19 to discuss the issue, but the visit did not yield a satisfactory result.

Several office bearers of the YDA’s Lahore chapter announced at a protest camp set up in front of the SKMCH that they would hold a protest demonstration in front of Faletti’s Hotel on Egerton Road on Friday between 9am and 10am.

The demonstration has been planned to coincide with the opening of the SKMCH’s annual symposium. YDA officials said they were expecting around 400 young doctors to show up.

YDA Punjab president Ajmal Chaudhry said they had planned a protest demonstration for Wednesday but a TV anchor had requested them to meet Khan first and talk out the issue.

He said a 10-member delegation of doctors led by Chaudhry had met Khan for 10 minutes in his container at the Constitutional Avenue in Islamabad on Wednesday.

He said they had told Khan that the SKMCH could not terminate doctors for no reason.

Regarding the five doctors issued show-cause notices for protesting, he said. “Khan told us that he would get back to us by Thursday on this, but he hasn’t... now we will demonstrate.
