PESHAWAR: A policeman was killed while four other law enforcing officials were injured when militants and police exchanged fire in Wazir Bagh area of Peshawar on Wednesday night. A militant was also killed in the incident.

The exchange of fire took place when police, and security forces raided a house in Wazir Bagh following a tip off. The inhabitants of the house, however, fired at law enforcers, injuring four officials and killing one policeman.

A large contingent of police were dispatched to the area to cordon it off in order to deny the attackers an escape. But the militants shot out a nearby electricity transformer, plunging the area into complete darkness, allowing some of them to escape.

One of the militants, who had hid in the house, was killed during a commando operation by security forces. CCPO Ijaz Khan told The Express Tribune that apart from the militant killed, another had been injured.

“One police man has been killed while a militant has also been killed who had taken position inside a house,” a police official of the Yakatoot police station said.

The injured personnel were shifted to the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) where one of the officials was described to be in a critical condition. The slain officer was identified as Fakhare Alam.
