With the occasional skyrocketed gold prices in Pakistan, many people are turning towards silver jewellery and decoration items. Between its lustre and versatility, it is evident why chaandi is a fashionista favourite. But if not properly cared for, silver can go black. The material turns black due to the reaction of sulphur present in hydrogen sulphide from air. As compiled from shinyadornments.com, the Reader’s Digest and Self Magazine, follow these simple tips and keep your silver jewellery in mint condition.

Avoid exposure

Silver tarnishes when it comes into contact with cleaning products, such as bleach. Foods that comprise sulphur, such as mayonnaise, eggs, mustard, and onions, cause silver to corrode. Avoid exposing silver to sweat, so don’t wear silver while you’re doing household chores. Direct sunlight and chlorinated water also cause silver to wear out. Lotions, cosmetics, hair spray and perfumes are also foes of silver and will accelerate its sullying. Wear your silver after your cologne and lotion are absorbed in your skin.

Proper storage

Silver jewellery should never be kept with other metals or in the open. Your silver trinkets should be tightly packed while storing them in small zippered plastic bags. Not only will that maintain your jewels in good condition, but also prevent jewellery items from rubbing against each other. Silver jewellery must be shielded from air when not being worn, as that can speed discoloration. Each time after wearing silver, gently wipe each piece of jewellery clean of make-up and skin oils with a 100 per cent cotton cloth before storing. This increases its longevity.

Clean correctly

To get your jewellery clean, place it in a bowl lined with aluminium foil. Fill the bowl with hot water and mix it with one tablespoon of bleach-free powdered laundry detergent (not liquid). Place the jewellery in the solution and let it soak for about one minute. Rinse well and air-dry. This procedure makes use of the chemical process known as ion exchange, which can also be used to clean your daadi’s stained silverware. To remove built-up tarnish from your silver, make a thick paste with a quarter cup of baking soda and two tablespoons of water. Apply with a damp sponge and gently rub, rinse and buff dry.

Be careful

Chaandi is a yielding metal and will scar easily. Pure silver is relatively soft, malleable and can be easily damaged, so try not to hit it against tough surfaces. Remember to take your silver rings off before pumping iron at the gym. Don’t place your silver jewellery in direct contact with bare timber as it consists of an acid that will tarnish its exterior. Also, shield it from rubber and cardboard, since they are lumber pulp produces, which promote ruination. Avoid keeping silver in envelopes or even in small cardboard boxes.

Use it

To prevent silver tarnish build-up, wear it. Wearing your silver jewellery frequently is usually the best way to prevent tarnish from building up along with regular cleaning. For those who wonder if silver is good for skin, Marina Peredo, associate clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, said it isn’t as long as you clean it regularly.
