ISLAMABAD: The Senate session on Friday was adjourned without taking up any of its scheduled agenda in wake of Diwali.

The Senate session had resumed on Friday morning at 11.15am, 45 minutes after its scheduled time of 10.30am.

After recitation of the Holy Quran, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Rehman Malik, on a point of order, asked chair of the house, Deputy Chairman of Senate Sabir Baloch to adjourn the session till Monday to observe Diwali.

Senator Baloch asked Leader of the House Raja Zafarul Haq to express his views regarding adjournament, who said that as the National Assembly on Thursday had decided to observe Diwali, and not meet on Friday; hence, the Senate should also be adjourned.

The deputy chairman while deferring the agenda of the day adjourned the session till Monday.

PPP’s Senator Taj Haider while talking to The Express Tribune said if the house had to adjourn, then they should have been informed on Thursday.

The PPP senator added that he wanted to move a resolution in support of Diwali, and congratulate the Hindu community on their festival but unfortunately members adjourned the session before he had the chance.

JUI-F’s Senator Hafiz Hamdullah said he planned to move a resolution condemning terrorist attack on JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

“I submitted my resolution in the Senate Secretariat not only condemning the terrorist attack but also seeking high level inquiry into it to find those who targeted him.”
