KARACHI: The residents of Defence Housing Authority (DHA) will now be able to use treated sewage water for their gardens, parks and traffic medians.

The residential authority inaugurated a sewage treatment plant on Thursday morning for this purpose. "The plant will be able to clean 2.4 million gallons per day (MGD) at its optimum disposal, which will be used to make every corner of DHA greener, said DHA administrator Brigadier Zubair Ahmed, while inaugurating the treatment plant (STP) in Phase VIII.

"We are committed to providing our residents state-of-the art facilities," he said. "Due to environmental hazards around the city, the DHA has successfully taken this step to install the plant so that pollution levels can be overcome."

Another reason why the plant is a crucial addition to DHA's infrastructure is that it will keep children safe. "A lot of children were falling sick after they played in parks that were soaked in untreated water," Brig Ahmed explained.

"Earlier, sewage water was being disposed of into the sea, which caused serious hazards for our sea life as well as the entire environment,” he said.

Salient features

The treated water will meet internationally accepted environmental standards for the disposal of sewage water and will be managed by highly qualified engineers, said Brig Ahmed, adding that the project is worth Rs498 million.

"Keeping in view the rapid development and population increase in DHA, the authority has embarked on the construction of four sewage treatments plants," he announced. These four plants will treat approximately 12.4MGD, he added.
