LAHORE: Chief justice of Lahore High Court constituted a larger bench on Wednesday to hear a petition regarding the failure of the government to make public a judicial commission’s report on the June 17 Model Town violence.

Sheraz Zaka said the commission had forwarded its report to the government on August 9 but it had failed to make it public. Zaka said the government was trying to suppress the report as it had held the chief minister, former law minister and police responsible for the incident. He asked for directions to reveal the findings. The bench will resume hearing on October 3.

Does the court really have to form a large bench to rule on such a fundamental right to freedom of information? This report was written by a judge and its publication is not only a fundamental right but of great benefit to the public. What is LHC waiting for?
