ISLAMABAD:

Researchers, producers and other stakeholders at the first national workshop on durum wheat in Pakistan, organised by the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) on Monday, explored the prospects of the commodity, its production and demand over the long run.

The two-day workshop, held in collaboration with the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre at the Wheat Research Institute Faisalabad, brought together scientists, researchers, durum wheat producers, millers, representatives of the food processing industry, restaurants, seed producers and input suppliers.

A statement issued by PARC said durum wheat was an important cereal crop mostly grown under rain-fed conditions in semi-arid tropics. It is a quality produce trading in a generally higher quality food market and fetches higher prices than bread wheat internationally. There is a demand for durum wheat-derived products, especially pasta products.
