The district leader was in his car when unidentified armed men opened fire in the Tor Gundai area.
Farooqi died on the spot and his body was shifted to Hangu hospital.
Police cordoned off the area after the incident and started collecting preliminary evidence from the site.
JUI-F provincial chief Maulana Gul Naseeb condemned the killing and called for an inquiry into the attack.
