KARACHI:

Pakistan’s Muhammad Asif has been nominated by the Asian Confederation of Billiard Sports (ACBS) to participate in the 6-Red World Championship, which will be played in Thailand from September 1-6.

He was chosen by virtue of being the 2013 6-Red Asian Champion and will depart for Bangkok from Lahore.

The former IBSF World Champion recently lost his crown at the Asian 6-Red Championship, played in Karachi, after suffering defeat to Hamza Akbar in the last 16.

Asif has been placed in Group G alongside England’s Stuart Bingham, Scotland’s Greame Dott, Austria’s Andreas Plöner, Wales’ Gareth Allen and Thailand’s Dechawat Poomjaeng.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for me that I’ll be competing against top players,” Asif told The Express Tribune.

“The exposure of playing in such tournaments is always helpful because you get to learn new things and I’m looking forward to doing well in the event.”

All the round robin matches will be based on the best-of-nine frame affairs and the top four players from each group will qualify for the knockout stages. The title winner will receive 2.5 million Indonesian Baht.

Besides Asif, sixteen professional snooker players will be featuring in the competition, and the Pakistani cueist said he expected a tough fight.

“It’s not easy to play against professional players because their game is of a really high level,” he said. “However, I’m determined to put up a substantial fight.”
