Police assault: Lawyers call strike after assault

The KBA and the Malir Bar Association (MBA) have announced the strike against the police behaviour.

Legions of lawyers have called a city-wide strike call for Saturday to protest the police assault of the Karachi Bar Association (KBA) lawyers at the bar room in City Courts on Friday.


The KBA and the Malir Bar Association (MBA) have announced the strike against the police behaviour after after barged into the association’s bar room and attacked the lawyers while attempting to arrest a suspect who was just given bail-before-arrest by a district and sessions court in a murder case.

Shagufta Siddiqui, an additional district and sessions judge in district West, granted the bail to Nazar Muhammad against the surety of Rs200,000. Nazar, who had documents worth only Rs100,000, was waiting with his counsel in the room for a relative who was arranging the remaining surety amount the police tried to arrest him.

Nisar Ahmed Shar, a member of the managing committee of the KBA, said that a boycott of legal proceedings will be observed against the ‘police action’ on Saturday. Meanwhile, the general secretary of MBA, Lutfullah Seelro, also announced that the lawyers will stay away from district courts in Malir.

Inspector booked

Seperately, a police inspector was booked under the Anti-terrorism Act for allegedly threatening to a judicial magistrate on Friday. The police said that the inspector, Syed Manzoor Chandio of crime branch of police, appeared before the court of judicial magistrate in district central, Mohammad Aslam Chandio, in connection with the hearing of a case and he allegedly threatened the magistrate.

He was booked under sections 506-B (punishment for criminal intimidation), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) of Pakistan Penal Code read with Section 7 of ATA on the compliant of the magistrate.
