KARACHI:

The Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) has included Samir Iftikhar in the Davis Cup squad that will play the Asia-Oceania Zone Group II tie against Philippines on April 4.

A PTF official confirmed on Saturday that the 21-year-old Iftikhar is a last minute change in the team. He has replaced Muhammad Abid, who had earlier represented the country in Vietnam for the first-round tie.

“Iftikhar is included in the team now,” said Arif Qureshi. “We can make the changes before the tie. Aisamul Haq Qureshi will also be playing for Pakistan.” Earlier, it was unclear whether Aisam would join the team or not. Iftikhar has been playing the sport for the University of New Mexico at the US Tennis Association regional level. This will be his return to Pakistan tennis after two years. Pakistan has lost its previous three meetings with Philippines in the Davis Cup.
