Did you know that there is a street named after the former Pakistan cricket team Captain and legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram in Karachi?
Surprisingly even Akram was not aware of the fact before today.
Coincidentally, as he was going to the shoot of a new television commercial in Karachi, he spotted a road sign bearing his name.
Excited to find a street named after him, he got out of his car and took a photo standing next to the street sign. Akram later that he just had to have a photo taken with the street sign.
He tweeted:
I was on my way for TVC shoot in North Nazimabad, Karachi when I came across this. I just had to stop for a photo!

The street is located at North Nazimabad Block A, near KDA chowrangi in Karachi.
It is a residential street and approximately half a kilometer long.

This area has all the streets named after our sportmen, mostly cricketers, all in vicinity of Asghar Ali stadium, built by Dr M Muhammad Ali (late) the great sports lover and promoter.I do not recall any other personality who was such a lover and promoter of sports.
@MZ: is there any street in Pakistan named after Dr Abdus Salam the only noble prize holder of Pakistan ?
Nearby there's also a "Sa'eed Hayy" street with a helpful tennis racquet drawn over his name for people who might not know about the 1950's Pakistani tennis player

A great initiative. It's better to acknowledge our heros through such steps. Rather than having Bhains colony, Machar colony, Andaa morr, Naagan chowrangi things in Karachi, as a citizen, I would love see the dedications after our national heros and stars.

He is lucky to have a half km road named after him because in this particular area, a street shorter than the the Waqar Yunus's run up is named after him. Actually all the streets connected to the main roads to North Nazimabad were named after famous personalities (including poets, scientists, players writers etc.) in Mustafa Kamal's era. As this main road is leading towards the Asghar Ali Shah Stadium, most of the streets connected to this main road are named after the cricketers.
Its a good practice to honour notable citizens of your country and in many countries, this is done with a lot of media publicity so that more and more people know about it and get inspired to follow in the footsteps of the notable person (artists, scientists, sports persons etc.)...For example in UK, whenever they name a street after a person or declare a building, they display a "blue plaque" with the details and the unveiling of the "blue plaque" is a public event, usually televised on TV channels so that the other citizens know about it and get inspired. We could get our own "green plaque" ceremonies for such events and the local governments could take the initiative so that such signs are there for generations to come.
Wasim Akram's ancestral village is Chawinda Devi in Amritrsar. His grandfather was a Patwari and migrated to Pakistan in 1947. My village is adjacent to Chawinda Devi, I do not expect Wasim Akram to know this.
