The injured official's identity is not known as yet.
"Two men riding a motorbike stormed the office of an immunisation officer located inside the premises of Civil Hospital Mattani and shot him dead," senior police official Ijaz Khan told AFP.
Provincial health minister of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Shaukat Ali confirmed the attack.
"Routine immunisation of children was going on in the hospital at the time of the attack," he stated.
The attacks come despite a recent fatwa by a prominent religious scholar, who urged parents to immunise their children against polio and other life-threatening diseases and said vaccinations were compliant with Sharia.
Gunmen have frequently attacked polio vaccination workers, accusing them of being Western spies and part of a plot to sterilise Muslims.
Pakistan is one of only three countries in the world where polio is still endemic, but efforts to stamp out the crippling disease have been hit by repeated attacks on health teams.
A global eradication campaign has reduced polio cases by 99.9 per cent in the last three decades, but it remains endemic in Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The disease is highly infectious and can cause irreversible paralysis.
Officials blame the violence and suspicions about the vaccine for a surge in cases. According to the World Health Organisation, Pakistan recorded 72 cases of polio this year compared to 58 in 2012.
New Delhi last week announced it would require citizens from Pakistan and other polio-affected nations travelling to India to take a mandatory vaccination for the disease at least six weeks prior to their departure.
Previous attacks
On December 13, two police officers and one polio worker were shot dead in separate incidents. In the first incident, two police officers providing security to a polio team were killed when unidentified men opened fire at them in Swabi. In the second incident, unidentified men on a motorcycle had opened fire on a polio team working in a village in Jamrud resulting in death of one of the polio workers.
On November 30, a police official was killed and another injured when unidentified men fired at them in Peshawar. The police officials were providing security to the Gulshan Rehman team of polio workers administering the vaccine in the area.
On November 21, 11 teachers were abducted and Khyber official Niaz Ahmed Khan had said the militants who abducted them may have mistaken them for a polio team that had just left the school after giving polio vaccinations.
They were abducted from Khyber Agency and released on November 25. A tribal elder, speaking on condition of anonymity, had said that the militants freed the teachers on condition the government stop sending polio teams to the area.
On October 10, three khasadar officials of Khyber Agency, who were providing security to polio vaccinators, sustained injuries when a roadside bomb targeted their vehicle on Ring Road near Achini in Peshawar.
On October 7, two people were killed and over a dozen – including two polio workers – were injured in a bomb blast outside a dispensary in a village on the edge of Peshawar. They were scheduled to finalise security arrangements for the ongoing polio vaccination campaign in the area.

Love it.
@Lala Gee: And how does one get 'halal polio drops'.Must be very innovative to do so and why from Saudis Is it sanctified if "it comes from there" and if such a thing is possible.
@ZAM: I do not think US or any other agency is keen on polio drives. when their lives are under threat. It is up to Pakistan to ensure whether it wants eradicate diseases which modern science has enabled and has done so in the case of small Pox.If it persists in blaming others it will one day be isolated. It is of course upto the citizens to believe in this or undergo the trauma of pain, disfigurement and dependance life long as a cripple.
@Lala Gee: The Saudis don't have any scientific infrastructure to manufacture these stuffs. So you are pretty much stuffed.
And on top of this, Pakistan wants Kashmir!
I bet Ik wont be 'shocked' hearing this news.
I Salue the brave Polio Vaccinators in Pkaistan ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ They fight disease ignorance and terrorism every day. The society owes a huge debt to these people. May God grant peace and heavens to the departed soul . The Govt should look after his family till the children are grown up.
Why do people think the thing was a hoax to religion to drink polio vaccine? Dead polio workers and supervisors, and the entire NWFP sitting nights in vigil and grieving parents? all for a Religion or mission to destroy NWFP????? There's no genius in the world that could successfully do something like that and the whole thing just be fake on the pseudo name of religion. My daughter is 6. Really still a baby. I can feel how these babies goes through. These children must have been terrified when they were saw gun shoot. I will never understand how an adult can bring themselves to do something so awful just for religion or else???This is so heartbreaking and terrifying. I can't imagine what they went through and are still going through. So so tragic. Rest in peace. Shall we leave Pakistan for sfae future of our children? U may ask me Who stopping u??
Dr. Afridi used phone, TV, cars buses and many other modern gadgets including pen, books, medical education and medicines. Let us stop using all these items as well. The KPK govt of PTI and JI is never going to go against these killings of innocent workers as they are too busy in protesting the deaths of a few terrorists killed in targeted attack. What is more imp for us, what is our number one priority. Some Pakistanis are gloating with the idea that we can use Polio as a weapon against the world. The world is not going to allow this perverted blackmail. We are going to be cornered and isolated from the rest of the civilized world.
@ZAM: Because Pakistan AID workers are apparently being also used to perform under cover intelligence duties.. Why must anyone need a para medic bod to give a dosage of Polio vaccine? Every Parent can who also feeds the child!
Rex Minor
@Aliiii: Where is KPK police?
@Yo!: Shakeel Afridi was nt involved in a polio camp but a jaundice camp. After all Shakil Afridi incident happened in 2011. Why was polio nt wiped off before that as it has been in other arts of the world?
Its high time a travel ban should be put on all Pakistani nationals flying to other countries as they definitely are a threat to otherwise polio free world.
Yo Buzdil Khan! Protect the innocents, and bring justice to the killers instead of bedding them.
@Yo!: Since when was Dr. Shakil EVER acting as a Polio Worker????
@Jg: Everything from KSA is Halal....!!!!
@Lala Gee: Hahahahahahaha...halal drops.thats a good one.
What they are doing on the name of islam? Why they are committing henious crime on the name of islam. please think and hear carefully everyone is not Dr.shakil.there are many others want to make services of human being.let them do their work.
Prominant religious scholars unanimously issued a Fatwa through which they declared vaccination not against the fundamental principles of Islam.they described immunisation as justtified and essential for betterment children's health which provide safety from dangrous diseas.
The anti vaccination elements in fact are knowledgeless people do not know what is diseas and treatment and prosperity and security of the human being.
They know playing with innocent people's lives .They are professional killer and main aim of their life to earn money For their own prime object,is to esclate terrorism everywhere.
Another sector where "jihad" is needed against these antisocial elements who want a crippled society. This shows their level of intelligence!
So is this how the PTI's "estranged brethren" plan to help immunization?
If anyone can negotiate with these people over the polio vaccination - then we can believe in any other kind of negotiations ........... this is just an agenda to create strife and tension ........ people who kill health workers do not negotiate
pti is cleaning all the mess of the past 60 years
Not a conspiracy theorist but why is it that every time someone talks about peace initiative in KPK, all of a sudden a series of bombing at public places start to happen. Now when the security establishment want to start yet another failed operation in Waziristan and want the blocked NATO supplies reinstated, they are particularly singling out polio workers to have IK change his mind. You can differ to my opinion but we all know how dirty our security establishment is.
@omar: Don't worry payed workers of PTI are about to awake its Saturday - give them some time. We all know how much PTI is paying them for their comments for last one year!
May be Mr Khan should direct a part of his tsunami blocking the nato routes to guard/assist these worker but again it could be too much to ask from him.
KPK is most difficult province to handle and PTI is handling quite well.
OK PTI haters, start blaming PTI, like if others do...they will not do these kind of acts.
Pakistan must arrange for Halal polio drops from Saudi Arabia and must allow militants to administer these drops. They can start with minorities to gain trust that the halal polio drops work.
International community must realize the seriousness of this issue and help Pakistan by providing trade incentives so that we have our own money to fund this program. There will be no hope of polio-free world or in south-Asia as long as Pakistan has polio.
PTI need to change its policy on terrorism. Imran khan should stop defending TAliban
Where is the federal govt who should be controlling FATA so terrorists don't attack Peshawar? Asleep!!!!!!!
May he rest in peace and god give strength to his family and friends bear this loss. Polio workers are the real life heros who put their own life in danger to save the next generation from this scourge. Big salute to these unsung heros from across the border, they inspire us.
This is highly distressing. Especially the lack of any civil society response to these killings. Pakistanis as usual asleep at the wheel. The cost of not eradicating Polio is huge for Pakistani society and its national prestige. Already the re-surfacing of Polio in Syria (which unlike Pakistan had eradicated the disease) is being linked to infections from Pakistani jihadis fighting in Syria. If the re-appearance of polio in other societies is also linked to Pakistan, it would be a new low for the country.
Clearly this is a nation of idiots ruling a society of ignorant sheep. And to think India thinks of this mess as a threat LOL!
Where is the PTI governments intelligence wing.........ASLEEP.
Why is USAID and its puppet agencies hellbent on this polio thing. If Pakistani children don't take qatray how many become infected...one in a million. Why would all dini scholars oppose it with one voice if it was halal.
There is much more to this than meets the eye.
Terrible to read about this.
One request please - identify the deceased by name - all of them, if you can (without putting anyone else in danger that is). These people should be honoured and remembered.
Using Dr.Shakil, as spy and a polio worker affected the polio drive pretty badly. Got to think out of the box to win some respite. Maybe bribe them, or catch them and punish badly - anything! End the polio menace!
