Presiding over a meeting at the Investment Department here, Sindh Board of Investment Chairman Muhammad Zubair Motiwala said Sindh was blessed with enormous potential for wind energy which, if tapped, could generate more than 50,000 megawatts of electricity.
The Gharo-Jhimpir wind corridor, where a large number of wind mills can be installed, is 60km wide and 180km long with average wind speed of seven to eight metres per second.
Motiwala said Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah had approved allotment of land for a fast-track development of wind power projects following a short order of the Supreme Court allowing provision of land for wind power projects through investment under the Renewable Energy Policy 2006.
He was of the view that an efficient solution to the energy crisis could only be achieved by encouraging investment in renewable energy.
As a result of persuasion by the Sindh Board of Investment, he said, the Land Utilisation Department had issued directives to the deputy commissioner of Thatta to facilitate Western Energy and Hydro China Xibei Engineering Corporation in carrying out a survey and other field studies for speedy implementation of their projects. In the meantime, the land lease issue should also be resolved.

@Truth: Wow that's the power equivalent to light up the whole current world ?
We shouldn't compare ourselves to India always. It is8 times bigger with different issues. What is good for Pak may not be good for India and vice versa. If they are doing better in a field then we should learn from them but no need to compare. We need to look at making ourselves better all the time regardless what happens in other countries.
India is light years ahead than us in all fields !
The International Energy Agency estimates India will add between 600 GW to 1200 GW of additional new power generation capacity before 2050. Remember 1GW is 1000MW.Currently pakistan is producing only around 16GW of electricity.
It is not the windmill, for God sake. It is called wind turbine. Know the difference.
You are not living in middle ages or nineteenth century anymore.
We also take initiative to develop our wind power sector and day is not far that we will overtake pakistan in this field also.

@Energy Guru: India is a vast country than pakistan.Since the population is concentrated more on sides of indus valley river in pakistan and in india it is almost evenly distributed all over india.So the electricity penetration might be less. The percentage of un-inhabited place in pakistan is much higher than that of India.Indian population is evenly distributed as far as villages are concerned all over india and since a big country reaching to those population will be a difficult job.

As of 31 Jan 2013 the installed capacity of wind power in India was 19051.5 MW which is more than all source of electricity production in pakistan.Soon the country will become the third biggest wind power after China,US.
My company which has also installed windmills, is about to start it's commercial operations soon.
its good to see provincial governments now competing with each other in the energy sector. good news already coming from Punjab, Sindh and KPK.
Very encouraging news. The government is moving in the right direction. Valuable time is wasted by outdated red tape by outdated Revenue Department rules and procedures. The CM Sindh is urged to set up a special field team equipped with latest electronic survey equipment and given the responsibility of delivering a demarcated parcel of land to the entrepreneurs. If difficulties have to be faced, let the government employees face them, not the wind farm promoter.
