There is good news for those residents of DHA and Clifton unwilling to travel the extra mile to Saddar - a new cinema has opened in the neighbourhood.
Located inside The Ocean Mall that replaced the old Mideast Hospital, Cinepax is the latest in Karachi’s hangout places. The formal inauguration of the cinema was held on Wednesday evening amid cheerful celebrities and excited families. The cinema comprises four screens - all of which can play 3D movies.
Following the footsteps of Atrium Cinemas, Cinepax has also introduced a convenient system to reserve tickets over the phone. They also plan to start online bookings soon. With three different classes of cinema halls - platinum, gold and silver - the most expensive ticket is Rs1,000 and the least expensive is Rs450.
“It is a small effort towards the revival of the Pakistani film industry” said the chief executive of Cinepax, Hashim Raza. “Cinema-going culture is reviving given that so many families came to the inauguration of the new cinema.”
Raza told The Express Tribune that Cinepax is “basically a new step in the right direction”. “We promise to entertain families by screening both classic and modern movies,” he promised.
During the opening ceremony, operational manager Kashif Meghany said their goal is to attract people, especially the younger ones, back to Pakistani movies. “Pakistani filmmakers will no longer go to neighbouring countries to promote their films as the opportunity to screen their films with modern equipment is now available here.” Cinepax will be screening both Indian and English movies at the same time.
“We can compete with cinemas around the world with our state-of-the-art seats and the facilities we are providing to our viewers,” he said proudly.
Young celebrity couple, Mani and Hira, were also spotted at the inauguration. Both of them were confident the cinemas will attract a new audience since it will screen modern and classical films. Residents of DHA, Shehzad and his wife, Rahiba, also felt that the opening of a new cinema reflected a healthy sign for Pakistan’s flourishing cinema industry.
The red carpet host, Aqsa Faiz, was excited that the experience of watching films has taken a whole different turn with the inauguration of 3D cinemas in Karachi. “The technology and entertainment services have progressed day by day,” she said.
However, not everyone was able to catch a show on the first day as only guests were invited for Wednesday’s screenings. Waqar and Sameer were strolling in the halls, planning to watch a movie once the cinema opens for regular screenings. They agreed that the location of the cinema was a good decision.
“The management should distribute some free tickets for the common people, as we want to watch the movie with celebrities and models,” one of them said, chuckling.
The tickets for a movie at Cinepax cost:
Platinum: Rs1,000
Gold: Rs750
Silver: Rs450

its a cinema, chill out. people can enjoy themselves once in a while. yes, prices are higher than atrium but then again, the facilities are better. and as for those who say, i just go for the movie, the atmosphere does make a big difference.
secondly, we don't need to associate every single happy occasion with "omg the entire country's dying of hunger, how on earth can i allow myself to have fun". you're allowed to enjoy life once in a while. Please keep your 'holier than thou' attitudes to yourself. and while we're on it, many of the burgers of DHA have done a lot in regard with philanthropy and helping our people. talk about stereotyping!
@pakistani nice to see this in pakistan like fame cinemas in india
@Pakistani "good to see world class cinema in Pakistan…" sorry to disappointing you dear, but no its not.
So finally we can get seats in Atrium easly as the burgers of DHA and Clifton will no longer travel extra miles to Saddar. Sigh!
Soon I'll print my feet =P Seems its great edition of Cinema in Karachi ;)
Ignore the negative comments guys.. lets roll and have a blast . There are already only a handful places for entertainment in karachi .lets make it a successful place
good to see world class cinema in Pakistan...and dont worry about the ticket prices...this nation is extremely rich...Mashallah
@Javeria Mahmood: @Umair: I agree with Javeria And Umair...think about it....the construction for this must have started much before the tsunami warnings started. Also just sticking to cinemas, whose gifts to Karachi are the Cinepax near Sea View and the Atrium?
It looks somewhat like PVR Director's Cut in Delhi. The latter has small tables with lamps on them between the recliners, is larger and has a better interior. BUT it also costs almost double of that...INR 900 on weekdays and INR 1200 on weekends. With that in mind, the price for Cinepax seems reasonable.
@Optimist “The Irish famine of 1846 killed more than 1,000,000 people, but it killed poor devils only. To the wealth of the country it did not the slightest damage." (Marx)
Seems tickets are cheap there, good for Public Here they asked min. 850 INR for Platinum (in any multiplex)
Get me Silver seat with less fuss than Atrium...and its a deal.

This is a business venture being run by entrepreneurs with relevant industry experience. They have invested money in this venture and will definitely look for returns. Yes, there is income disparity, but it exists in every society. If someone cannot afford to watch a movie at Cinepax, there are various other options available in the city in the vicinity of MA Jinnah Road. We always complain about the lack of entertainment in Karachi and this is a positive step in bridging that gap. I guess it is about time we learn to appreciate things rather than criticizing them at the drop of a hat.
Well to all those people who are complaining that new things are introduced in DHA and clifton only, I would say to those people to please stop whining. If you do not know, all the major cities of the world have posh areas and are the most developed. So, even in khi, we have two adjacent posh areas where new things will open before they move to different parts of the cities, if ever. It is how the city is planned. This is where the market is and if you are a businessman, you will open up a shop where you will have the most profit. There is no point in opening up a Cineplex in a place like Gari Khata where most of the people cannot afford to even buy a Rs.450 ticket, let alone Rs.1000 ticket.
@optimist.. Can't agree with you more!
trust me there are several in defence who will happily pay for this extremely frequently:)
The rates are as of in Dubai.... Do we need these Luxuries right now in Pakistan? I would feel asleep on these couches installed in the cinema.
@Umair: come on..... you got to be kidding me
@Optimist: you selfish attitude helps build these places. You guys live in your own bubble in the posh areas of Lahore, Isb or Karachi. Sad truth, we all are oblivious.
Rates are too high. That means they have only targeted clifton and defence audiance. Atrium should also reduce thier rates to attarct people from other locations.
@Balla Totally irrelevant comment. For gods sake this news item is about opening of a cinema...lets enjoy it. Do we need to complicate everything? even the good things?
@Balla: It is pretty much the same in every metropolitan across the globe, with varying intensities but you know what i mean
A gift by PTI for residents of DHA/Clifton. Couldn't have asked for more!!
I can just imagine how horrible the traffic will be like when this new mall opens properly. Its a pain to go to dollmen city mall on the weekends because of hundreds of cars parked along the side of the roads. Delawala market (already crowded most days) and adjoining areas to ocean mall will also show the same picture in the coming days.
@Hasan: the remaining 20%...its a no brainer man
CONGRATULATIONS to residence of Clifton and Defence they are going better than the rest of the Karachi where people are dying in target killing! Heaven in Karachi and all karachiites should move in DHA and Clifton since there is no much political violence and people are enjoying the high life!....whoo whoo
And they increase their rates on holidays like Eid to exploit their customers and maximize the profits. Talking from my experience of visiting cinepax in Rawalpindi.
@ Hassan
I am just sick of such negative comments! One can even be negative and say: 'Why read about entertainment when people are hungry? Why not help them instead? . I have often failed to secure a table in top 20 restaurants in Karachi and Lahore. People are paying thousands of rupees and all tables are booked esp in the evening. . Pakistan is a big country so even if you are right (you are not!), 20% of our population is more than the population of many countries in Europe! 20% of population is enough to keep these places busy for a long time to come. . Let's assume for a second that 80% is hungry, how not building such a cinema will help them? Businesses provide jobs and generate revenue.
The other 20%
who will pay for this when 80% of the country goes to sleep hungry ?
That picture above, sigh, i now plan to watch Fast and the Furious 6 on these seats. But let me confirm, Platinum tickets, I will go once in 8 blue moons.
