Adam Gilchrist reminded the world of his old self as his unbeaten 85 powered Kings XI Punjab to a comfortable seven-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League yesterday.

Chasing a sizable 175-run target, Gilchrist tore the Bangalore bowling apart with 85 off 54 balls including 10 fours and three sixes as his team comfortably sailed home with 11 balls to spare. He was ably supported by Azhar Mehmood who scored 61 off 41 balls.

Man-of-the-match Gilchrist praised Mehmood for his supportive role.

“I think Azhar deserves the award,” he said, according to ESPNcricinfo. “He came in and played his natural game. He helped me loosen up.”

The win kept Punjab’s hopes of qualifying for the playoffs open. They are now in the sixth position with 12 points from 14 matches.

Earlier, Chris Gayle (77) and Virat Kohli (57) scored quickfire fifties to help Bangalore post 174 for five.
