KARACHI:

The Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) has requested the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to organise a rematch of the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania zone Group II tie between Pakistan and New Zealand that was awarded by the referee to the latter.

According to Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) officials, the Davis Cup Committee will consider the country’s appeal today.

The decision brewed up considerable controversy, with Pakistan tennis ace Aisamul Haq Qureshi declaring it a violation of the spirit of the Davis Cup which he believes is a way to build friendly ties between competing nations.

Meanwhile, the ATF affirmed their support for Pakistan with its President Anil Khanna sending a written request to the Davis Cup Committee after a board meeting in Bangkok. The letter stated that the committee should overrule the referee’s decision and allow Pakistan to re-host the tie on another venue.
