LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) directed a petitioner to amend his application and seek a judicial inquiry of deaths caused allegedly by the use of cough syrup Tyno and a registration of cases against all responsible individuals and authorities.

The petitioner, Judicial Activism Panel chairman Muhammad Azhar Siddique, had earlier filed an application stating that there was a dire need to constitute a judicial inquiry tribunal in order to conduct a detailed inquiry of the incident.

During the hearing of the petition on Friday, Justice Manzoor Ahmad Malik ordered the petitioner to amend his application.

The petitioner prayed that appropriate directions be issued for registration of criminal cases against the authorities concerned who acted negligently so that no such incident can occur in the future.

Azhar Siddique had earlier moved two separate applications to the chief minister and chief secretary of Punjab for a judicial inquiry stating that at least 16 people had died after taking toxic cough syrup of a particular pharmaceutical company.

He had said that a fair and free investigation was required to unearth the real facts of the incident, asking both the chief minister and the chief secretary to hold a judicial inquiry.

The petitioner had stated that he would move the Lahore High Court in case the provincial government fails to appoint a judicial commission.
