Over 23m may suffer heart diseases by 2013

A noted cardiologist has stressed on the commonly known phrase “prevention is better than cure” and change in lifestyle to combat heart diseases.


“Over 23 million people [in Pakistan] are feared to develop cardiovascular diseases (CVD) by 2013,” Maj-General Dr Azhar Mahmood Kayani said while giving a lecture at the “Meet the Scientist” programme of the Science Society of the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) here on Monday, said a press release.

Dr Kayani discussed the high risk factors and easy changes in lifestyle to combat the disease.

The noted cardiologist with over 30 years of clinical experience shared the results of data analysis that his team carried out to assess the impact of CVD in the county’s population and presented a range of statistics to the audience.

Gen Kayani is currently the Executive Director of Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology.
