A ‘Coke Studio’ wish list

Published: August 8, 2012

Here’s a list of musicians that could get appreciation on “Coke Studio”.

KARACHI:

“Coke Studio” season five was criticised for being one of the most forgettable seasons in the history of the programme.

Pakistani music lovers, however, didn’t give up on the show’s potential and have now fixated their eyes on the upcoming season. What will Rohail Hyatt and the house band offer next year, is the question that is swimming in every music lover’s head. Competition is getting tougher as India’s “Coke Studio” has improved and now stricter comparisons will be made between the Indian and Pakistani version of the programme. Pakistan could up its game by bringing some of the untapped as well as evergreen musicians on board.

Najam Sheraz

Despite his frequent and rather unpredictable spells of religious preaching, Sheraz is a big asset of Pakistani music industry. From his early days with Karavan, during which he brilliantly rendered the epic “Rakh Aas” to his solo hits like “In Say Nain” and “Meri Aankhon Mein Samai Ek Larki” the musician has a huge potential pool which could help “Coke Studio” attract fans.

Fuzon

Fuzon is one of those mainstream bands who haven’t been given a chance on “Coke Studio” yet. Previously, people and producers had issues with Rameez Mukhtar’s style of singing but now they have a brand new vocalist with Khurram Iqbal. Iqbal impressed the judges in the Indian music show “Saregamapa” and now he is all set to be the voice of Fuzon — a band that has some memorable songs to its credit. It wouldn’t be a bad call at all to give them a song or two in the upcoming season.

Bunny

Although Mohsin Raza Khan better known as Bunny left music a while ago, his recent comeback with Roxen has amazed us all. He may not have the creative juice to produce an original number at this age but he still has a gifted voice and that is what Hyatt can utilise somehow in the coming season. Bunny was one of the rare singers who stood out during the 80s because of their very unique vocal texture and style of singing and he still hasn’t lost it.

Alamgir

The founder of Pakistani pop music is back with a bang with the revamped version of “Keh Dena” in the currently running online series “Mangoes”. His long and successful trip to Pakistan proved that despite his kidney problems, the live shows he did in Karachi and other cities say a lot about his stamina and vocal brilliance. We are sure that if approached, the legend would relive some of his classic numbers under the patronage of Hyatt and the house band.

Abbas Ali Khan

Khan is someone who has always brought something new to the market and succeeded in impressing the critics and public alike. His new song “Par Mein Hoon Ruka Sa” was yet another soulful number like “Sun Re” and “Malaal” and brought something soothing to the market if not original. With his versatility and impressive portfolio, Khan could be a brilliant feature in the coming season.

Comebacks

Along with the new selections, it’s also time to call back some of the finest musicians who have done a brilliant job on “Coke Studio” in the previous episodes. Our selection includes none other than the true rock star of Pakistan, Ali Azmat revamping some of his brilliant songs from Klashinfolk or singing some of his unreleased music. On the other hand, Sajid and Zeeshan should play some songs from their amazing new album Harvest, which is one of the most mature music albums in the history of Pakistani music.

Coke Studio is losing its touch because it is getting away from sufi music and traditional music (like that demonstrated this year by Fareed and Hadiqa).

Hyatt should add more Sindhi, Baloch, Seraiki and Pashto music to give coke studio the lifeline.

Coke studio India has 3 Sindhi songs this year and several sufi songs. Just compare the quality!!

Faakhir, Abrar, Ali Haider and Shehzad Roy to name a few established, old-school pop acts who didn’t get any exposure on Coke Studio. I think Coke Studio is delving more and more into experimental, newer acts and classical stuff. It needs to embrace its pop side a bit more to make things fun.

Although i am not a huge fan of Bunny but as you wrote, if age is a factor for Bunny, then why not for Alamgir :P

Anyhow, in my opinion, these should be included or recalled for at least 1 more season:
Alamgir, Mohd. Ali Shyhaki, Najam Sheraz, Shiraz Upal (if and when he comes out of self-imposed restrictions), Ali Haider, QB, Rushk (Behti Naar fame), Mekal Hassan Band, Arooj Aftab, Shehzad Roy, Aamir Zaki, Sajjad Ali, Abrar-ul-Haq, Arif Lohar, Meesha Shafi, Ghulam Ali and Ataullah Khan Esakhelvi.

And for at least 2 more seasons, enough of:
Noori, Atif Aslam, Sanam Marvi, Bilal Khan, Zeb & Haniya

India’s ‘Coke Studio @ MTV’ is not doing better because we have old good names. Its doing well because they are bringing in little known music masters from every corner of the country and mixing up different forms of music from different cultural background and putting up a composition that in a way is a demonstration of the unity in diversity… Look for example i don’t understand a thing of Sindhi language but i loved the Sindhi lyrics in some of the songs in ‘Coke Studio @ MTV’. Funny! Is not it?
You don’t get it? Look at these music from this season:
    1. Clinton Cerejo – Madari – Hindi pop with desi lyrics mixed with Punjabi folk with a modern background score…
    2. Clinton Cerejo – Dungar – Sindhi folk (Saawan Khan Mangiyaar) with western style chorus in the support…
    3. Allah hoo – Traditional Sufi/Punjabi folk with a mix of traditional musical instruments and modern ones…
    4. Amit Trivedi mixing up classical carnatic vocals (south indian music) with a contemporary western band…
    5. Clinton Cerejo – Saathi Salaam – Sindhi folk with hindi/urdu with rock/metal music mix…
    6. Hitesh Sonic – Do Gallan – Punjabi pop with classical carnatic mix with contemporary western score…..
Pakistan needs to celebrate its complete diversity through and with music and experiment the same way ‘Coke Studio @ MTV’ is doing. Thats all….

    My wishlist:
    1. Usman Riaz
    2. Orangenoise/Uncle bunkle Jingle Shop/Lower Sindh Swing Orchestra (doesn’t matter which, all of them have more or less the same band members)

I dont agree at all that this season was one of the Most forgettable one. For the first time Coke Studio tried to bring the local culture of cities which was dying out and I have no idea how come people criticize coke studio for that. This season is not forgettable at all but Obviously some of the songs were in the language pertained to most hated community in Pakistan so for many people it is forgettable but for many it is not.

    Coke Studio” season five was
criticised for being one of the most
forgettable seasons in the history of
    the programme

Really? This is the first I’ve heard of this. In actual fact Coke Studio hit new heights in the latest season. Rohail Hayat has turned CS into a celebration of Pakistan’s rich indigenous cultures, instead of the Hindustani language and culture that have been forced on us Pakistanis for 65 years.
Rohail Hayat is a near genius, so guys, keep your advice to yourselves. He doesn’t need it.

@entropy: Because this time Coke studio experimented with some Punjabi songs and anything in Punjabi is anti Pakistani, Anti Islamic, forgettable, disgusting and full of painduness and anything Urdu or in any other language other than Punjabi is Pro Pakistani, Sane, beautiful, moral, truthfull, full of culture and its deserves all respect that you can imagine in your life.

this is the first time I’ve heard something bad about coke studio season 5 and I’m quite shocked. I thought it was a great season, I’m in love with songs like charkha nolakha, neray aa, paisa da nasha, and many more. Chakwal group was a great find in their rich folk songs alongside bohemia and Meesha Shafi was outstanding! It was a 100 times better the previous 2 seasons which didn’t emphasize enough on the music fusion Rohail has been renowned for in CS. New talent does need to be explored and all genres need to be tapped for the future, I’m sure a genius like Rohail Hyaat will be able to deliver!
