MANSEHRA: South Asia is a very important region owing to its natural resources. However, challenges such as corruption and terrorism have marred its development. These views were expressed by Sri Lankan High Commissioner Air Chief Marshal (retd) Jayalath Weerakkody during a visit to Hazara University (HU) on Friday. “Unless the literacy rate is increased, socio-economic development will remain an elusive goal,” he remarked. The high commissioner praised the university’s efforts in preserving Buddhist remains and suggested introducing student exchange programmes to enhance their knowledge of South Asia’s culture. The university’s vice chancellor briefed the high commissioner on the heritage sites identified and preserved by the varsity. “HU has preserved over 700 sites and artefacts in Hazara division alone,” he said.
