US seeks ‘clearly defined’ ties with Pakistan

US respects seriousness with which parliament’s review of US-Pakistan relations was conducted.

WASHINGTON: Washington said Thursday it seeks enduring and well-defined relations with Islamabad after Pakistan’s parliament backed new guidelines on ties which ban the transport of arms across its soil to Afghanistan.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the United States had “Seen that the Pakistani parliament has approved” the 14-point framework for revised terms of engagement with the US and Nato.

“We respect the seriousness with which parliament’s review of US-Pakistan relations has been conducted,” she said in a brief statement.

“We seek a relationship with Pakistan that is enduring, strategic, and more clearly defined. We look forward to discussing these policy recommendations with the government of Pakistan and continuing to engage with it on our shared interests.”

The recommendations drawn up by Parliamentary Committee on National Security also include a call for an end to drone attacks in Pakistani territory and an unconditional apology for US air strikes in November that killed 24 soldiers.

Western officials were keen for Islamabad to commit to reopening Nato supply lines closed in the wake of the air strikes before a summit in Chicago next month.

Islamabad’s closure of the Afghan border to Nato following the air strikes plunged relations with Washington to an all-time low after Pakistan was humiliated by a US raid that killed Osama bin Laden last May.

The guidelines did not address the resumption of Nato convoys but said Pakistani territory must not be used for transporting arms and ammunition to Afghanistan – a demand of several political parties including the opposition.

@US Centcom: You see, i am talking logically about our relation ship. I accept that through out our period of dip US has been extending helping hand but when you were most needed, at that time in mid air you withdrew your hand.i.e. 1965 war(all crucial ammo stopped) 1971 war. again all help stopped, indian nuclear test ignored ( India was in USSR camp), all sanctions imposed on Pakistan when it even started nuclear programe. 1989, end of USSR( only possible due to Pakistan) US just abandoned Pakistan and left( we both had it) ,You in shape of 9/11 and Pakistan in shape of present Mullah brigade. India have always kick your hind but i don't know what magic they have got that you prefer our arch rival over us and then say we want to have long durable partner ship with you. Suppose we say that we love North korea and have all sort of love affair with her and then call you to tell we want good friend ship with you. Could we complete ingredients of that friend ship while in love with North korea. In fact there is a saying that , WITH FRIENDS LIKE THESE, WHO NEED ENEMIES" and mind you once you are called friends in some meetings every body mischievously smiles. It has always been your interest, we know that how you control UN, it was easy for you to solve Kashmir problem but i think resolution will not help your interest. recently you went head over heals to please india to get the billion dollar jet deal but recognizing your black mailing potentials( stopping of spares and all that) they just ignored you and went to France leaving you bitter. On other hand we who have been serving you loyally with our blood don't deserve your favor( you have stopped our military aid EVEN now). IN this scenario, your talk of friend ship isn't a bit strange.

A prosperous and stable Afghanistan is in the interest of global peace and security specially for neighbours in particular Pakistan .Afghanistan with a population of 30 millions approx. is the most unfortunate country which has been victim pf war ever since 1979 soviet invasion. At least half of it's population was born during this violent period. This is a great human tragedy never witness before. They need a break and fresh air of peace. It is indeed very heartening to observe that both USA and Pakistan sincerely want to enhance and strengthen the existing relationship. They have moved from position of self interest to the position of mutual interest. All the stakeholders including USA and Pakistan should continue to help Afghanistan become a vibrant country.
