FUAAST starts search for new vice chancellor

Dr Muhammad Qaiser, the outgoing vice chancellor, looks after both FUAAST and KU.

KARACHI: As Dr Muhammad Qaiser took charge of Karachi University (KU) as its vice chancellor last week, the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) began to put together a committee that would seek his replacement. 

The search committee has seven members. Two members are nominated by the president and one of them has to serve as the convener. Two members each are nominated by the university’s syndicate and its senate. Additionally an education expert, who is not affiliated with the university, is also nominated by the senate.

This time, the president nominated the chairman of the Higher Education Commission, Dr Javed Laghari, to convene the committee, while the director of the Institute of Business Administration, Dr Ishrat Husain, was his second nominee. The former KU VC, Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, and former federal secretary, Dr Masuma Hasan, were nominated by the senate. Prof. Dr Tanvir Khalid, a former student adviser at KU, was nominated as the education expert. The syndicate nominated Prof. Dr Tauseef Ahmed Khan and Prof. Muhammad Zahid from among the faculty members. Two honorary members have also been appointed: Sindh governor’s principal secretary, Mumtazur Rahman, and the vice chancellor of Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Dr Naushad Shaikh.
