SIALKOT:
Industries, especially those relying on exports, must put in place improved safety standards and avoid hazardous chemicals which are used in machine cleaning as Europe is going to introduce strict regulations to restrict the use of various products made by these industries, says an ICI official.
Speaking to industrialists at a seminar at the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) on Saturday, ICI’s Senior Trade and Business Development Manager Syed Noman Jafri said industrialised countries were in the process of imposing a ban on various products manufactured in industries using hazardous chemicals and this could also hurt Pakistan’s exports.
ICI has decided to launch an information campaign to educate industrialists about safety standards and press them to look for alternatives before Europe and other countries ban these products.
Jafri pointed to the fact that many local companies had no safety standards in place for hazardous chemicals, which was severely damaging the environment, especially water resources and cultivatable land.
“A lot of substandard chemicals are being imported into Pakistan. This means many industries are producing substandard products, even though they are paying much more than the price of substandard chemicals,” said Jafri.
Talking to The Express Tribune, SCCI President Naeem Anwar Qureshi said industries should adopt safety standards before it was too late.
