Point of view: ‘Nawaz should have shunned point-scoring’

Khosa says no evidence against Pervaiz Elahi in Bhutto’s assassination.

Governor Sardar Latif Khosa on Tuesday criticised Pakistan Muslim League president Nawaz Sharif for political point-scoring during a visit to Benazir Bhutto’s mausoleum in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh.  

He was speaking to the media at his arrival in Dera Ghazi Khan for a week-long visit.

Khosa said law enforcement agencies were investigating the assassination and that seven people had already been indicted in it. He said warrants for the arrest of former president General (retd) Musharraf had also been issued by a court in Bhutto’s murder case.

Khosa said while the federal government was doing its bit in Bhutto murder case, Punjab government had not taken any action despite the fact that Bhutto was assassinated in the province. He said the provincial government had also failed in making headway in tracing the kidnappers of Shehbaz Taseer, son of former Governor Salmaan Taseer.

Khosa said there was no evidence to suggest that PML-Q leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi had a role in Benazir Bhutto’s assassination.

Governor Khosa ruled out resignations over the memogate issue by the president or any other member of the government. He said facts related to the issue would surface in the inquiry led by the parliamentary committee containing members from all political parties represented in the parliament. Khosa said Pakistan Peoples Party supported of a Seraiki province. He said it was the PML-N that was opposed to the division of Punjab. He said Senate elections would be held on schedule and added that President Asif Ali Zardari would return to the country before the Senate elections.

Khosa said media should exercise restraint and ensure that they were not falling for rumors and propaganda guised as news. He said there was no threat to the government and that it would complete its constitutional term.

He said a number of infrastructure development projects were underway in the southern districts of the province and construction of several roads linking cities and villages would be completed in the coming months. He said the federal government was also considering a proposal to set up a High Court bench in the division.
