The occasion of Baba Guru Nanak Dev’s 543rd birth anniversary, for which more than 13,000 pilgrims had gathered at Nankana Sahib, was soured by allegations of a rape of a pilgrim.
The allegations fell on a police constable, who is said to have raped a Hindu woman on the premises of a Gurdwara.
The case was reported on November 8 at the Gurdwara Tambu Sahib, at a distance of one kilometre from Gurdwara Janam Asthan Nankana Sahib, Guru Nanak’s birthplace. However, the incident was hushed up by local authorities and the police, leaving most pilgrims unaware of the case, sources familiar with the matter told The Express Tribune.
The victim, one of around 10,000 Pakistani Hindu and Sikh pilgrims, had come to Nankana Sahib from Rahimyar Khan. More than 400 police personnel were deployed for the birth anniversary of the founder of Sikhism.
The constable was reportedly caught red-handed in a room at Gurdwara Tambu Sahib by some Sikh pilgrims who gathered at the Gurdwara for religious rituals, sources said, adding that the pilgrims thrashed the constable and locked him in the room.
The constable was handed over to DPO Dr Haider Ashraf who later sent the accused to a police station, sources added.
A case was registered at the Nankana Sahib police station on the complaint of the victim’s husband. Shahbaz, a clerk at the police station, said the FIR has been sealed while the accused constable has been sent to jail on judicial remand.
“We have taken action against the accused according to directions from higher authorities,” SHO Sajjad Akber said in response to the allegation. Ashraf said all evidence gathered will be sent for a DNA test.
The Evacuee Trust Property Board, however, said there was no rape case and a police officer had walked into the women’s bathroom.

@M Bilal: Imagine if this had happened in Makkah or Madina to a Muslim woman. Such is the magnitude of this incident. Do not trivialize it. Apologies for my bluntness.
Rapist has been sent to jail...These kinda cases happen everywhere...Stop targeting religion/nation...
strict action should be taken against the accused ... Pakistan needs to show no tolerance towards rape
@MarkH: It will be almost impossible to prove as per existing laws in Pakistan. There will have to 2 or 4 independent male witnesses. As women's evidence does not carry weight. And to find so many male witnesses in a ladies toilet is not possible so case dismissed.
Hang him! It is time that Govt come down hard on people who do such sick things through swift justice and exemplary punishments.
it deserved unreserved condmenation and maximum punishment for the culprit under the law. here one is reminded of another cop who murdered the gentleman he was on duty to protect. and those who lauded the cop for his dastardly criminal act included lawyers, political leaders, maulanas. And the judge who acted in accordance with law had to leave the country as he could not feel safe anywhere in this so-called land of the pure.
Such crimes have no place in Islam. The act is highly condemned. Also it has nothing to do with minorities or majority. The policemen in general consider themselves above the law as they have many sympathizer in their own department. I am sure he would have acted similarly had there been a Muslim lady instead of the victim.
These pilgrims are our guests which makes this crime even more heinous.
Also I second kashans comment, sick people are everywhere, and unfortunate women and children are always the most vulnerable segments of the society everywhere. Hope justice is swift and strict in this case.
@Sanjay and Indian Trolls Which hell hole do you want to get out of? Pakistan? Okay sure no one is forcing here to stay. You might like to live in another hell hole Delhi which despite being a capital has rate of a rape taking place every 29 minutes (according to indian newspapers) You cant protect make your capital safe, wonder what the rest of the country is like for your women. So yea I think our hell hole sounds alot better than yours. Having said that, this is an absolutely despicable and digusting incident. I hope the caught culprit is dealt in the strictest terms and made an example of, to make sure such incidents never happen again. Every year Lahore goes out of its way to welcome their Sikh neighbours from India and we try to make sure they are availed to and welcomed in every way. This is an unfortunate incident and I hope it never happens again.
@M Bilal: There aren't many countries that press their devotion to a peaceful and kind religion as their reason for existing and it also being embodied in every action taken, either. You rarely see comments similar to "a Muslim couldn't have done this crime because the victim is another Muslim," replacing "Muslim" with whatever it is they believe the most elevated label of the century is when it comes to crimes elsewhere.
It actually stands out amongst other rape incidents. Because when it happens in places with ideology similar to Pakistan, it means they're living one big lie every single time it happens. Each time that "common" crime occurs without them appropriately reacting and making someone take responsibility for it, the harder it is to not have it stand out as different as they continue to not skip a beat on their forced/contradictory image they keep trying to make the world see them as. Areas that differ in that aspect because there's nothing complicated about it. They're not betraying their flawed and human image.
Yes, whenever it happens, it's just as bad one place as it is in the other without exception. It does stand out in comparison to a "faultless, pious, devout and holier than thou" society.
Totally condemn the incident.
As if this is the first rape on this planet.. Sick people are every where irrespective of religion and nationality.
What if a Nono Muslim had done it at a Muslim Holy shrine. Protests and blasphemy, for this man here he will go unscatched as in Pakistan its easy to commit crime against minorities and walk away.
We are scared of living in this hell hole! get me out
Is it normal for policemen to walk into ladies toilets in Pakistan?
