Post wedding jitters: Dealing with ‘veiled threats’

Burka-clad man arrested for stalking sister outside district court.

A burka clad man was arrested near a court for allegedly trying to kill his sister.


According to police officials, the man was arrested in the premises of the Jhang district court after his sister told police officials that he was stalking her.

Mauza Nagi Mosa resident Jannat Bibi told police officials she had contracted a marriage with Shaukat earlier this year. “I married him against the will of my parents and since then I have been getting death threats from my family. My husband and I have been moving constantly,” she said.  “My parents have repeatedly issued threats to kill me as well as my husband,” she said.

Jannat Bibi said that she had sought shelter in the Dar-ul-Aaman in Jhang for several months after filing a petition and getting permission from the area magistrate. “I also filed for protective custody as there were several attempts already made on my life,” she said. As per orders of the court Jannat Bibi was asked to appear in the court on Monday. “I was walking near the court rooms when I felt I was being stalked by a very tall women. She was in a burka and her hands and face were completely covered,” she said. She told police that Darul Amaan employee Rani and the Muzaffargarh lady constable became suspicious and told the duty police to check the woman stalking them.

Sub inspector Police Wali Muhammad took the woman in custody and discovered that it was Umar Hayat, Jannat’s brother. During the interrogation, accused Umar Hayat confessed that he had planned to kill his sister. The accused also told to the police that Jannat Bibi had embarrassed his family. “She has disgraced us in the entire biradri by contracting a marriage of her own choice. I want to kill her to restore my family’s honour and will be proud to do so whenever I get the chance,” he said. “Our culture does not allow women to decide issues of marriage by themselves. She has violated our customs and disgraced us all. She does not deserve to live,” he said. Kotwali police have registered a case against the accused vide FIR No. 905/11 under section 419, 606/2 and 13/20/65 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) on a written complaint of Sub Inspector Wali Muhammad. SHO Kotwali Jhang Ghazanfar Ali Gujjar said that the accused was presented before the court and all legal requirements have been completed. The accused has been sent to the Jhang district jail for 14 days on judicial remand. He said that an FIR against the accused would be completed shortly and submitted to the area judicial magistrate for his persecution.Jannat Bibi said that she required protection for herself and her husband. “I know that my family will not give up on trying to kill me. My brother being arrested will only anger them further,” she said.
