ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza has convened the first session of a recently formed 17-member multiparty special committee on September 6 to discuss ways and means to restore peace in the violence-prone cities of Quetta and Karachi.

According to a brief statement issued on Tuesday from the National Assembly Secretariat, the committee will convene at the Parliament House at 11:30am on September 6, where members will elect their chairperson. Speaker Mirza had set up the panel two weeks after the lower house of parliament passed a resolution calling for a political solution to the unrest in Quetta and Karachi.

The committee has been mandated to look into the law and order situation in the Balochistan capital and report back to the house with recommendations within two months.
