Indian model vows to strip for WC win

Poonam Panday says she wants to excite Indian players to play better.

NEW DEHLI: Women in India are encouraged to dress modestly at all times, but a brasher side to modern life has been exposed after a popular model vowed to strip naked if the nation wins the cricket World Cup.

Poonam Pandey, 20, who features in a best-selling Indian swimwear calendar, said she wanted to provide an incentive to players by promising them she would bare all – though whether her offer will be welcomed is not known.

"I'm a cricket fanatic and I'm a die-hard supporter of my nation. India needs a lot of support and this is my way of supporting the team," she told several newspapers on Wednesday.

Asked by reporters if she was pulling a publicity stunt, she replied: "Absolutely not. I'm confident of my body and I'm doing this to excite our boys to play better."

Pandey received widespread media attention for her pledge, with the Times of India illustrating its story with a colour photograph of her wearing a skimpy bikini.

"Pray for Todays Match that the Boys Play well and make us Proud," she said on her Twitter page ahead of India's crunch semi-final game against Pakistan.

Her offer echoes that of Larissa Riquelme, a model who attracted global fame by pledging to run naked through the streets of Paraguay's capital Asuncion if her country won the 2010 football World Cup.

Paraguay were knocked out by Spain in the quarter-finals and she instead posed nude in front of her national flag.

Plus I also believe that she loses her dignity as a woman by striping down her clothing. Thats it!

Nothing she is a model and models do strip all the time no doubt, to wear something new even if its as good as being naked. If anybody wants to be naked, nobody should have a problem with that. If somebody wants to wear a burqa there should be no problem with that too. I am just saying its everybody's own choice. Liberals are nude, I guess, and they have the right to be nude at their home, their car, their office, etc. But if they walk up to me nude, I am going to slap quite a few.

Even if someone does not associate it with any religion, still any society where people wear clothes would dislike such actions. She can also collect money from others purposeful shows and spend those money on people who has nothing to wear due to poverty in India.

Anon | 13 years ago | Reply To all of those who are saying that nothing wrong with public nudity because we were born naked, let me say this, when we were born we could not speak, or walk or write. Does that mean we should not do those things anymore? I am a woman and I am not comfortable with public nudity (mine or someone else's). Clothes were invented to protect the body and some where along the way they got associated with morality. However if you are ok with public nudity because it has nothing to do with morality (and rightly so), you should also be ok with having sex in front of public (sex is also as natural as nudity if I am not wrong). And today you are ok with it is because it is some "Poonam Pandey", you should also be ok with it if tomorrow your mother, sister or wife decides to do this. You cannot have double standards about it then.

It's a way of increasing her fame in a land of over a billion people, in order to get access to a larger income stream. Really, I don't find her very attractive at all and it is a cheap publicity stunt. Please keep your clothes on and let's focus on the upcoming final match.

Nudity in the first place is not acceptable in ordinary business of life which is why we all wear cloths. Now dont say we do it to look good otherwise a new series of debate will start on whether or not we are created beautiful in the first place. Secondly it is in my humble opinion 'a compromise of dignity' for a women to go nude as a publicity stunt or in an effort to be noticed or to be put a price on. Going nude to increase your media ratings is somewhat similar to prostitution which is an accepted vile. What I said above was: 1. It is a compromise of dignity to go nude to excite the boys. 2. It would be right for a religious scholar (belonging to any religion) to criticize such actions and it would not be bigotry AT ALL. 3. And if someone is so aesthetically enlightened that they dont mind nudity and would actually support it then I suggest that like all good things, the stripping should also start from home and hence cut us some slack from your own home then we shall see how you like it. All in all it might be good to see someone else's daughter or sister or wife go nude on national television but it might not be so dignifying to bring the show home. "what is the purpose of civilization if we want to remain just the way we were born".
