KARACHI: The Criminal Investigation Department’s Anti-Extremism Cell arrested a suspected Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) man on Tuesday, while two men, including an alleged Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) member, were also arrested.

According to AEC SSP Omer Shahid, Alauddin Barki was slain TTP leader Baitullah Mehsud and TTP chief Hakeemullah Mehsud’s accomplice. Barki’s name was in the CID red book’s fifth addition. His brother Ehsan was arrested in November 2010 from Baldia Town and the police seized a suicide jacket from him.

Barki allegedly admitted that he was involved in kidnappings for ransom to raise funds in Karachi. The SSP said the group was increasing membership from areas, including Sohrab Goth and Landhi. “For the past two months, they were not as active and the aim was to free imprisoned members.”

Barki was arrested from Sohrab Goth after the AEC raided a hideout. A case has been registered.

Separately, the Aziz Bhatti police said they arrested LeJ member Sajid Ali, accused of sectarian killings, during snap checking near Hassan Square.

He allegedly confessed to murdering at least four people: Muttahida Qaumi Movement worker Yawar Abbas Jaffery, worker Arshad Chohto, Pasban-e-Aza president Nayyar Zaidi and Muhammad Moosa.

The CID arrested Khan in Keamari. SP Mazhar Mashwani said the suspect had escaped from police custody at City Court and was wanted in three cases.
