ISLAMABAD: A judicial magistrate on Tuesday sent a former official of the Federal Government Services Hospital (Polyclinic), arrested on corruption charges, to the Adiala Jail on 14-day judicial remand.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had arrested former Polyclinic Deputy Executive Director Dr Iftikhar Ahmed Naru and Admin Officer Muhammad Arshad on Friday for their alleged misuse of authority and favouritism while hiring staff for the hospital.

An FIR registered against the two by the agency says Naru issued appointment letters to 102 people a total of 68 vacant positions of junior technicians at the hospital. The report further stated that 34 appointments were made “fraudulently”, “concealment of facts” and “malafide motive”.

FIA officials said that the appointment letters were prepared by Arshad and signed by Naru “knowing fully well that only 68 posts were available”.

Further investigations discovered that the officials had failed to complete  formalities and that only favourites were hired with only 23 out of the 102 appointed meeting  the requisite criteria.

The suspects have been charged with fraud, forgery and criminal misconduct.

Arshad, was produced before Judicial Magistrate Abdul Ghafoor Kakar on Tuesday after his physical remand expired and was sent to jail on 14-day judicial remand.

Naru and four other doctors of the hospital as well as a section officer of the Capital Administration and Development Division (CADD) are already behind bars on corruption charges. They were arrested by the FIA on September 1 for their alleged embezzlement of millions of rupees during the procurement process for the hospital in 2013-14.
