MANSEHRA: At least 45 villagers were arrested for obstructing a water supply project in three villages of Mansehra. This was said by Mansehra DC Iqbal Hasnain while addressing a news conference.

He said Qaumi Watan Party MPA Haji Abrar approved a gravity flow water supply scheme for Phul Doga, Chukli Miangan and Dewal areas of Darband in 2015 at a cost of Rs12 million.

According to Hasnain, the source of water was the hills overlooking villages in upper and lower villages. As a result, residents of these two areas vehemently opposed the decision to establish water supply lines. This compelled potential beneficiaries to go to court.

The DC said the complainants obtained a decision in their favour from a divisional bench of the Peshawar High Court. When public health engineering staff and the assistant commissioner went to the site to initiate construction work, the villagers stopped contractors from laying down the pipelines and even uprooted those that had been put in place.

As a result, the DC issued arrest warrants for 45 villagers under Section 3 of Maintenance of Public Order (MPO). They were arrested and sent to Central Prison Haripur. Section 144 has been imposed in these areas.

The DC added the court order would be implemented at any cost and work on the pipeline is in progress.
