ISLAMABAD: A judicial magistrate on Friday sent two National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) officials to jail for their alleged involvement in preparing fake identity cards for foreigners.

Shahzad Naeem and Shafqaat Ahmad, the suspects, were posted at a NADRA registration centre in Dinga, Gujrat. The suspects allegedly helped foreigners acquire computerised national identity cards (CNICs) after listing them on various family trees.

They were arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on July 12. The suspects had previously been remanded into FIA custody for two days.

The suspects were produced before Judicial Magistrate Abdul Ghafoor Kakar on Friday.

FIA Inspector Muhammad Arshad told the court that the suspects had also forged stamps of various government officials and used them to attest registration forms of foreigners.

The FIA inspector said that the fake stamps and other equipment had not been recovered yet. He requested the court to extend the suspects’ physical remand for seven days.

Mian Irfan, counsel for the suspects, opposed the FIA appeal and said that there was no justification for further physical remand since all documents were in the FIA’s custody. He prayed the court that the defendants should be sent to jail on a judicial remand.

The judge observed that since “all documents are in possession of the FIA investigation officer, there is no justification for further physical remand of the accused”.

The judge ordered the FIA officials to produce the suspects again on July 28 and submit a charge-sheet as soon as the investigation is complete.
