PESHAWAR: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa police have prepared a watch list of more criminals whose data will be displayed on its website. Three new categories have been added to the watch list – kidnappers, robbers and dacoits.

There are 28 kidnappers in the watch list. Of these, 11 belong to Peshawar district, three from Mardan, three from Kohat, two from Karak district, two from Charsadda, two from Buner, one from Bara, one each from Nowshera, Dir, Orakzai Agency and Rawalpindi.

In addition, 38 robbers, along with 12 dacoits, have also been included in the watch list.

Careful inspection

While speaking to The Express Tribune on Sunday, a police official said these watch lists had been created carefully by police and then published online.

“The main purpose of the watch list is to help people identify these people in the event of armed robbery and other crime as there were reports that some criminals restart their activities once they are released from jails,” he said.

According to the official, people have been advised to contact Police Access Service on telephone number 0800-00400 and inform the police about these people if they are found to be involved in criminal activities again.

“This will help the police identify those habitual criminals and arrest them,” he said.

“We suspect that some of those jailed for extortion have resumed their activity by helping militants in identifying potential victims for extortion calls.”

Previously, the profiles of 21 people had been published online who had been arrested by the police on the charges of extortion and then convicted by courts.

Out of the 21 convicted extortionists that were included in the watch list, seven hail from Peshawar district, five from Khyber Agency, two from Swabi district, two from Swat, two from Abbotabad, one from Haripur, one from Muzaffarabad and one from Buner district.

Rewind

In June, the provincial police decided to display on its website data of criminals who are involved in heinous crimes. The move was made to prevent recidivism as the police fear some criminals will resume illegal activities soon after they are released from jails.

The step would provide the public with a database of criminals which could be accessed online.

In addition, they could also help the police identify the criminals with the help of the database. If people have fallen victim to a crime, they could help the police identify the criminal through the database.

IGP Nasir Khan Durrani had said they had decided to put the pictures and all relevant information about criminals involved in heinous crimes on their official website to make it easier to identify them.

He said the data of those criminals and terrorists, whose name had been published in the police red book, were not included. The red book includes the names of wanted terrorists and criminals who have a head money on their arrest.
