Fashion designer and Senior Creative Director at the fabulous fashion house, Sana Safinaz, takes us through his style journey, and gives us a few tips on how to hide troublesome areas

Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage

How would you describe your body type?

Mesomorph. I’m 5ft 9”, which is the average height for a Pakistani male. Generally people tell me that I am fairly slim, but personally, I think I’m slightly heavy.

Has your body type changed over the last five years?

Yes, it certainly has. Five years ago I was very young and now I’m 32. I wasn’t ever athletic, I always had a softer look, but I would describe my body type five years ago as thin. With age and time you grow, and your body grows with you. In the last five years I’ve definitely gained weight. Even my face looks a lot older.

How has your style changed over the years?

When I was younger, I was a lot more experimental with my style and outfits. Over the years, I have realized what suits me and what doesn’t, so now I tend to stick to specific cuts and styles. I used to wear see-through shirts and I don’t anymore. Now I prefer tailored silhouettes, which give a more polished look. I like to layer on top, which helps me hide my stomach. I love wearing looser T-shirts, with a blazer on top to give my ensemble some structure and shape. Then for lowers, I combine the colour with my jacket or opt for white.

In your opinion what is your most troublesome area?

My chin and belly area.

How do you dress your body according to your body type?

I prefer layering with a blazer or a scarf. If I know I am going to be sitting, I’ll wear a T-shirt, rather than a shirt, to feel more comfortable. If I’m going to be standing, I don’t mind wearing a dress shirt.

In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here?

It’s important, especially for men, to wear something well-tailored, that fits right. You don’t have to wear a bow tie even to black-tie event if it’s not flattering on you! Being honest to oneself solves half the problems. Honest dressing is always the best route to take.

What silhouettes suit your body the most?

A pair of fitted cropped pants, a T-shirt, a blazer and some nice shoes is my go-to look in case of an emergency.

What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why?

A tie, because it’s just not me, I would never wear it!
