Struck down: Lightning leaves three dead in DI Khan

Over 150 wheat bags also burnt to ashes

DI KHAN: At least three people died in rain-related incidents in DI Khan on Monday evening. Thunderstorms and lightning lashed the southern district and brought much-needed respite from the scorching heat.

In Zandani village, two farmers were killed by lightning. Akram Baloch and Farooq were struck by lightning in a field and died on the spot. Separately, another person lost his life in Kot Wali village of Kulachi tehsil of DI Khan. His identity could not be ascertained.

About 150 wheat bags also burnt to ashes in the same area.

The storm sent trees and electric poles crashing to the ground. A large number of feeders tripped and communication lines were disrupted in various parts of the area.

DI Khan city suffered extensive damage as strong winds wiped out signboards. Moreover, stagnant water remained on the road.

“The rainfall was a blessing on the one hand as it brought reprieve from the heatwave, yet there were hours-long power outages,” Niaz Muhammad, a resident of DI Khan City, said.

He added, "Unfortunately, the city’s drainage system cannot endure such heavy rainfall and has brought about a lot of hardship for residents.”
