PESHAWAR: Commuters on the city’s roads have voiced their concerns over the lack of traffic wardens over weekends. Many of them believe this will lead to violation of traffic rules and hamper safety on roads.

Wardens deployed at main junctions and on roads in the city were mostly absent on Sunday after 12pm. Ahmad Khan, a resident of Hayatabad, told The Express Tribune he found no traffic wardens when he left his house over the weekend for family outings.

He said there are no traffic wardens on main routes such as GT Road on Sunday.

“I have witnessed many drivers violating traffic rules and posing threats to others,” Ahmad said.

With soaring temperatures, locals stay mostly at home and only those who own vehicles venture out to enjoy the weekend at places with cooler climates.

Furthermore, public transport is on the roads during weekends. He believed the scorching heat is possibly keeping these officials off the roads.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, DSP traffic said most traffic wardens had their weekly days off on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. He added the wardens had those officially off due to the lack of traffic over the weekend.

Tayeb Khan, a resident of Gulberg, said traffic signals system should be improved in the city to avoid violation of rules by drivers.
