One Piece Three Ways: Umaima Mustafa

three fashionistas show us how to put together an item from a designers collection

February 07, 2016

While trends fade, style remains eternal and one piece can be put together in many different ways. In this feature we have three fashionistas show us how to put together an item from a designers collection, according to their own style and taste!

This cape is one of Umaima Mustafa’s hottest selling pieces. Interestingly enough, the cape was initially designed as a sleeveless jacket and through various changes in fabric and design, it morphed into this immaculate cape. Even though it has fringe detailing and tassels along with appliqued embroidery, none of the embellishments overpower each other and are in perfect harmony. This well-designed garment is versatile and can be worn from day to night.

I would describe my personal style as classic yet fresh.  I enjoy incorporating certain trends that I like and are flattering on me. When I first saw this Umaima Mustafa cape, I decided to go for a laidback yet clean look, as the cape itself has a lot of embroidery on it and I did not want to take away from it.  I wore the cape with dark-blue flared denim jeans, a white silk tank top, and polka dot wedged heels. I then accessorised using a gold chain, and basic earrings. For hair and make-up I went for a natural look, using gold shadow, peach blush, and a soft blow dry. The wedge heels add some funk to my outfit, as I have kept it rather simple otherwise. I think this outfit would be perfect for something like a garden party.

Even though the cape itself would be best described as elegant, I wanted to try and create an edgy look to go with it. To create this I opted to wear an all-white, monochrome ensemble underneath. A pair of white distressed Zara jeans with a plain white crop top. I then went on to pair this with my neon pink heels, and my gorgeous Rema Luxe ear cuffs, which I think give it more edge and a rock-chick vibe. I put on a pair of black cat eye sunglasses to compelet the look. I would wear an outfit like this to a sundowner, as I think this makes for a great day to night look.

I decided to go for a fusion look to style this Umaima Mustafa cape. I wore tan flared cropped pants and a shimmery gold crop top. I chose to wear these colours so the cape stands out, as it is black and would contrast with the light colours of my clothes. It also goes with the beautiful beige embroidery on the back of the cape. All my accessories were gold, which included a box clutch, strappy heels, watch, earrings and midi rings. I did gold eye make up with dark lips and poker straight, sleek hair. I think this makes for a nice semi formal outfit, and I would definitely wear something like this to a dinner or an evening out.
