MEXICO CITY: Mexican-American actor, Kate del Castillo – who has found herself at the center of a money laundering probe – claimed Mexico’s government wants to “destroy her,” Univision reported. The 43-year-old has come under fire after helping actor Sean Penn conduct an interview with Mexican drug lord, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. Mexican Attorney General, Arely Gomez, has shared there were “indications” the actress has used money from Guzman to help finance her tequila business “I have no reason to give explanations to the press,” said Kate, in a message to Univision. “If I don’t talk, it’s because my lawyers told me not to as the government wants to destroy me,” she added. A publicist for Kate did not immediately respond to a request for comment. An official for the attorney general’s office declined to comment on the remarks as well, but noted that Arely has guaranteed the presumption of innocence will be respected. The office also shared that Kate would be questioned by authorities this week, sans details of when or where. However, her father revealed last week that she will testify at the Mexican consulate in Los Angeles and present proof that “she is clean.”

Sean Penn says Mexico wants him in crosshairs of Chapo’s cartel

The Mexican government has said a meeting between the actor, who played a drug boss in the television series La Reina del Sur, Sean and Guzman was essential to the kingpin’s recapture earlier this month. The day after Sean was apprehended, Rolling Stone magazine published an article by him, based on his and Kate’s secret meeting with Guzman while the drug lord was on the run.
